My Classroom Teaching Philosphy
The music classroom offers children of any age, ability, and interest an opportunity for individual and group creativity. My role as an educator is to facilitate a classroom where students of diverse backgrounds and skill levels join together to experience and produce excellent music. This requires a curriculum designed to guide each child in creating and performing well, regardless of their skill level. They will participate in moving, singing, and playing activities to kinesthetically, aurally, and visually learn educational concepts such as intonation, steady pulse, and phrasing. Each activity will be modified for students with disabilities according to their needs so they can participate, learn, and create exceptional music beside their peers.
Effective classroom learning is focused, time-efficient, and well-structured. It is important to provide each student with a distraction-free environment by effectively managing classroom behavior. The entire class will be engaged in educational activities throughout each lesson for full participation and learning at all times. Activities and exercises supporting the unit plan will develop each student’s musicianship according to their abilities. This focused, time-efficient, and well-structured learning environment enhances a student’s musical education so they may develop to their highest potential.
Students in my music classes will strive to develop the skills of well-rounded musicians. They will learn to sing and play instruments with appropriate intonation, steady time, rhythmic accuracy, and musical phrasing. These foundational musical concepts prepare students to succeed in creating and performing expressive music individually and as a group.
Children who exceed or struggle to meet expectations will receive differentiated instruction to appropriately challenge them. Assessments will uphold state learning standards to measure each child’s individual progress through constructive feedback from myself and their peers. My evaluations will inform students of their progress, develop their ability to self-assess, and identify concrete strategies to achieve musical goals. My personalized instruction and assessments allow each student to become successful, well-rounded musicians according to their individual skill level.
